Update 1/28/2015: So, Apple’s Q1 2015 (fiscal) financial results are in, and they had their best quarter ever. Maybe any company’s best quarter ever. They generated $74.6 billion in revenues, $18 billion in net profit (wow), and sold 74.5 million iPhones at a higher average price per unit (thanks to the iPhone 6+, of course). […]
Windows 10 Preview Build 9860 Available
Microsoft has released the first new build since introducing the Windows 10 Preview program a few weeks ago, specifically Build 9860. I’m not yet sure of everything that’s in it, but if your running the preview you can go to PC settings, Update and recovery, Preview builds and start downloading.
Microsoft Lumia: Goodbye Nokia
So, it’s official. Microsoft has dumped the Nokia brand and will be marketing its Windows Phones under the Microsoft Lumia brand name. This has been widely reported and is hardly news at this point–it was part of the Nokia hardware purchase agreement that Nokia would hold onto its name will handing over the Lumia brand. Personally, […]
Microsoft Releases Surface Hub for Surface Pro 3 Pen Adjustments
Microsoft has released a Windows Store app called the Surface Hub that enables configuration of the Surface Pro 3 pen. So far, the utility allows for adjusting the pen’s pressure sensitivity (valuable for graphic artists) and to assign the top button to either OneNote 2013 on the desktop or the OneNote modern UI app (regardless […]
Will Apple Put OS X on the iPad Pro? (Update: Touchscreen MacBook?)
Rumors are swirling that Apple is considering the release of a 12.9″ iPad Pro capable of running OS X, perhaps via dual-boot with iOS. As with all such rumors, details are sketchy–would this be the same OS X as runs on the Mac, or some kind of hybrid OS? Personally, I think it’s highly unlikely […]
Adobe Shows That Microsoft is Cool Again (Update: Behind the Scenes)
I don’t know how much of this is concept and how much is shipping today in the new Adobe Creative Cloud, but the following video reinforces my conviction that Microsoft is doing some very cool and very powerful things. The title of this video is “Adobe Illustrator on MS Surface,” but I see a whole lot […]
Microsoft 365: Will Microsoft Migrate to All Subcription Services? (Updated)
Update: Microsoft just announced their Q1 2015 financial results, and they did quite well. Relative to this post, the fact that 7 million consumers are subscribing to Office 365 is particularly interesting. Makes a pretty strong case for the kind of subscription service I envision here… Update 2 (10/27/2014): So, Microsoft announced unlimited storage for […]
Dell Venue 8 Pro 32GB for $199 at Amazon
I’ve been using a Dell Venue 8 Pro for a few months now, and I love it as an adjunct device to my Microsoft Surface Pro 3. It’s great for those times when I want to relax with a smaller Windows machine or use a less expensive device in dangerous circumstances (e.g., eating a sloppy […]
Surface Pro 3 Sales Going Strong?
Microsoft hasn’t released official sales numbers for the Surface Pro 3, and maybe never will with any precision, and so we’re left with analyzing various other tidbits of information to determine just how well it’s doing. AdDuplex, provider of metrics for Windows Store apps (i.e., modern UI apps) has released its September 2014 numbers, and […]
Surface Pro 3 and MacBook Air Suffer WiFi Issues
I’ve seen a few news reports about WiFi connectivity issues with Microsoft’s increasingly popular Surface Pro 3, primarily that some machines don’t reconnect to a network and/or that the WiFi adapter can’t be found after waking from certain sleep states. Microsoft has released a number of firmware updates aimed in part at resolving the issues, and indeed my […]
